Read Excerpts From “13 Bankers”

I’m reading Simon Johnson and James Kwak’s new book — “13 Bankers, the Wall Street Takeover and the Next Financial Meltdown” – and posting a summary and excerpts of each chapter. Here is my progress so far:

Flu & The System

The worst that could possibly happen would be a repeat of 1918, when the flu killed some fifty million people worldwide.  Most people who “die from the flu” actually have other medical condition that made them weak to begin with.  If you’re normal and healthy, you almost certainly will survive the flu, even though it makes you feel horrible.  Still, there are things you can do to get through it with less suffering.

I survived the last time the country was stricken by a killer flu, in 1958.  I was sick for one week, and lost a pound a day.  That’s

A non annoucement

It appears from today’s Dayton Daily News article that Preston’s $170 million big fish isn’t really in the boat yet. Speculation surrounding the timely announcement is being heard from all industries in the Dayton region. When you catch the hospitals, county officials and regional economic development leaders off guard, something is amiss.

We still haven’t heard from the other two Trustees in Miami Township. Were they asleep at the wheel, they approved the development deal with Clivus* in July. She visits California as part of her duty as a Trustee. A very frugal visit, cheap airfare and one night stay.

Incumbents’ Refusal To Participate In Public Forum Reveals The Weak State Of Our Democracy

Only five days to election. I’ve been enjoying going door to door talking with voters. I’m trying to talk with citizens who voted in the last “off year” election, in 2007. About 15,000 of Kettering’s 40,000 voters went to the polls in 2007. Everyone I’ve spoken with has been very nice and seems to appreciate the fact that a candidate for office is at their doorstep. Kettering is a great community.

I’m distributing a new flyer. Probably the most significant news on the flyer is in a boxed article with the headline “Community Meeting Canceled.”

See Video of Each Kettering City Council Candidate — Speaking At LWV Community Meeting

At the League of Women Voters Community Meeting this evening, October 28, held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, in Kettering, Ohio, there were about 40 people in attendance. Each of the six candidates took turns answering questions. I took my video camera and sat in the first row.

I decided to post on You-tube the concluding statement of each candidate. Dealing with video is very time consuming and after posting the concluding statement of five of the candidates, I realized that Frank Spolrich’s concluding statement was missing. Yikes. Evidently, I failed to push the record button during

It was not a $5000.00 mistake

Politicians rarely return money to donors. Usually they do it when the donor gets in trouble or there would be political fallout for the candidate or office holder. Today Trustee Deborah Preston bucks the trend and returns a $5000.00 contribution. She said the contribution was “legal, it’s ethical and it’s appropriate, and he had every right to make a campaign contribution,”

Let’s look at the entire story. Trustee Preston makes a secret visit to California in May according to public records released to this blog and the Dayton Daily news today. She secures a tentative agreement in May according to the

In Kettering’s School Board Election, One Challenger, Jim Brown, Surprisingly Defends School Board

Jim Brown surprised me. At the League of Women Voters community meeting last Wednesday, October 21, where all five candidates seeking election to the Ketttering Board of Education participated, Mr. Brown sided with the three incumbents. He defended the board’s advertisements for the 6.9 mill renewal levy last May, saying of the message of the ad campaign, “It was correct. It was accurate.”

At the meeting, I was flabbergasted by Mr. Brown’s stance, but I had only two minutes in my closing statement and so, at the meeting, I didn’t attempt to respond. Mr. Brown’s position is

Trustee Deborah Preston and Jon Slater

On October 19 Miami Township Trustee Deborah Preston (R), former Township Fiscal Officer and wife to Miamisburg City Councilman Darin Preston, filed her “Pre-General” Campaign Finance report at the Montgomery County Board of Elections.

She listed a carryover of $149.34 from her last report. She reported income of $9700.00. That is a good amount for an incumbent who is being challenged for her seat. Her husband, and campaign Treasurer, contributed $1,200.00 from his campaign account.

Sim Evans of Miamisburg, a strong Second Amendment guy and proponent of concealed carry laws gave Mrs. Preston $1,000.00. Understanding Mrs. Preston to be on the far

The Key To Discipline: “Nurture The Yearning For Learning Every Child Is Born With”

I’m enjoying going door to door and meeting Kettering voters. Yesterday, I was happy to hear a lot of good reports about Kettering Schools.

One woman told me that she had checked it out before purchasing her home and that she chose Kettering Schools over Oakwood Schools and that she is very happy with her choice. She said she feels that Kettering teachers really care about her children.

Another older man spoke glowingly about his five grown children — all successful professionals — and said he was very happy with the great education that his kids received in Kettering Schools.

Follow the money

After a dozen plus years reading campaign finance reports, one shouldn’t be surprised at the prices people pay for elected office. Look closely at the County Democratic Party and see their payment for consulting fees. This is for the services rendered to our Mayor. This, more than $5000.00, expense helped her get a new hairstyle, glasses and motivation to lose some of her more famous hats. Speaking of the Mayor, look at her contributions, many of the same folks who contribute are Republicans who wish her out of office on one hand and write checks with the other.

The most surprising

At Kettering’s LWV Community Meeting, Incumbent School Board Members Defend “ZERO Tax Increase” Ad

Last night the five candidates seeking election to the Kettering Board of Education participated in a “Meet the Candidates” program sponsored by the League of Women Voters. I was disappointed that so few people attended — only 30 or so — only a couple of teachers, only a couple of students. The Interim Superintendent, Jim Shoenlein, attended, but he was the only administrator I recognized.

The poor attendance for the event, to me, says a lot. I quoted David Matthews, again, that in order to have a strong system of public education, we need a strong democracy.
