Top DaytonOS Posts In Last 30 Days

It is interesting how content drives readership, how it is that viewers find a site, because Google or some other search engine has directed them to the site. The number one post in the last 30 days, with 521 hits, was an article that contained PDF files of the exact language of the five state-wide issues.

  1. Jeff says:

DaytonOS has turned into a political site, and I wonder why my Daytonlogy stuff gets redirected here since I dont post on politics that much.

  2. Mike Bock says:

Jeff, Here is how DaytonOS describes itself in the ABOUT section above:

“The purpose of DaytonOS is to advance ‘citizen journalism’ which means encouraging and facilitating citizens to play an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing and disseminating news and information. DaytonOS plans to develop several options for citizens to share information about a wide range of subjects from a broad spectrum of views.”

The purpose statement shows a huge goal that will require a lot of effort to accomplish. To move toward this goal, there will need to be a lot more people become involved. We have an open invitation for people to post articles, and a few have. We’ve had some good discussions in the comment section. I’m intending to eventually start actively soliciting participation. In this political season, I’ve written personal opinions signed by me — like, “Mike Turner Is A Bum …”, but if anyone wanted to post an article with an opinion contrary to mine, they only need to register as an author.

Part of the purpose of DaytonOS is to help connect area bloggers, and so, before I became involved, a list of Dayton blogs was created and these blogs are syndicated using the RSS feed indicated on individual blogs. Your blog was included as part of that list and, in the Dayton area, your blog is one of the more active blogs. I appreciate the quality posts that you make. Your posts are informative and educational. Your last three posts dealt with Downtown Vacancies, and included a lot of interesting illustrations. DaytonOS, I’m thinking, should serve the purpose of connecting you with additional readers and give readers an avenue to discover your blog that otherwise they might not have.

Just this week, I made some changes in how Dayton blogs are syndicated on DaytonOS. I’ve closed the comment option for syndicated blogs and instead have added a link to lead readers back to the original web-site. I think this arrangement will work better to connect readers to authors, and bring more readership to direct contact with the original blogs. So, your post, “Downtown Vacancy — Is It That Bad”, ends with, Make Comments At: Daytonology

I’m playing with the idea of how revenue could be generated through ads and how that revenue might be shared with original authors — maybe based on the number of hits specific articles receive. There are any number of topics that need in-depth investigation in Dayton and it would be great to develop a system of compensation that would reward a writer’s research and work in preparing an article — based on its success in generating readership. If DaytonOS could develop readership of 5000 or more each day, this might be feasible. The average number of visitors to the site, right now, is about 425 each day, and the average number of hits on various articles, each day, is about 1300. As an experiment, I’ve posted one large Google Ad and the average revenue it is generating each day right now is 72 cents each day (!). In 30 days that would amount to about $22 — eventually there may be a treasure to divide, if nothing else, at least as a symbol of appreciation.

In the long term, it would be great if every community could have a viable alternative, citizen based journalism, web-based, media — that would engage sufficient readers on a regular basis to have a positive educational influence in its community. It would seem this should be the arc to the future that our democracy needs. And so, maybe DaytonOS can help lead the way.

Having said all of that, if you would prefer that DaytonOS not syndicate Daytonology, of course, it is your choice, and I will respect your wishes.

Mike Brock and other media organizers,

I operate For The Love Of Dayton and do not want to be syndicated on DaytonOS. I do not appreciate my posts being syndicated through DaytonOS without my consent. I am not in league with DaytonOS or its supposed mission of “engaging sufficient readers on a regular basis to have a positive educational influence in its community” which is a thinly veiled attempt to tell readers how to think by twisting the news and controlling the media. I want NO PART of this site.

DaytonOS is one reason why I started posting “alternative” (aka conservative) news stories to the ones I was seeing posted next to my nonpartisan posts on this site.

    Thanks,
    Michael

It would be nice of you to also allow commenters to edit their comments after they post them.

  5. $22 a month is almost enough to cover the hosting fees! btw try the wider format ad size to match the other items in your right border.

  6. Mike Bock says:

Michael, you make a good suggestion that authors who post on DaytonOS should have more options to edit comments. I’m trying to figure out the best way to accomplish doing that.

I’m sorry that you are offended by the fact that for a time DaytonOS used the RSS feed that you supplied on your site in order to syndicate For The Love Of Dayton. It seems to me that posting an RSS feed is an implied encouragement and approval for others to have access to your site. DaytonOS has an RSS feed and I hope it is being used. Having posted an RSS feed, it doesn’t seem reasonable that you are offended that DaytonOS syndicated your site. You eventually did change your RSS feed to limit access to your site, and so DaytonOS has not syndicated your site now for several weeks. I did try to contact you several weeks ago, via e-mail, and expressed appreciation for your site, but you never acknowledged my e-mail. Maybe you never noticed it. I do agree that it would have been better to contact you and other Dayton blogs before syndicating Dayton blogs on DaytonOS, to make the endeavor a cooperative venture.

Yes, you do have a different point of view from my own, but DaytonOS gives you an opportunity to expand your readership and bring more readers into contact with your analysis and thinking. I can’t imagine why you would object to the part of the DaytonOS mission that you quote, “engaging sufficient readers on a regular basis to have a positive educational influence in its community,” except to maybe to say that such a mission is out of touch with what is possible. I imagine that you must have a similar mission.

Your site and other Dayton sites were syndicated as part of the initial DaytonOS formation, before I become involved in the site, and as the administrator for DaytonOS, I’ve now started some new policies concerning syndication, that I indicated in my comment above to Jeff, that I hope will be agreeable.

Anyway, I hope you can make it to the McCain rally tomorrow and take some pictures to post on your site. The rally is just a few blocks from my home, but unfortunately, I have another obligation that will prevent me from attending.

Bruce, I don’t know if I can make that ad wider or not. It seems that Google ads are a fixed size.

“Having said all of that, if you would prefer that DaytonOS not syndicate Daytonology, of course, it is your choice, and I will respect your wishes.”

Keep using my content, that’s fine. But change the name on it as for some reason I’m listed as “Herb”.

After reading your statement I see what you are trying to do here, and its a good idea to have a single site as sort of a clearing house for local blogs. Hopefully Daytonology can give some of background information & history for readers here.

  8. Mike, the vertical google banners come in 120 or 160 widths, not quite as wide as your column but it looks like you are running the 120. You could also try the square ads they go up to 336 wide..

Looking at this recent comment, I’m somewhat confused. You state that DaytonOS is “… a thinly veiled attempt to tell readers how to think by twisting the news and controlling the media”
Gee, I went to YOUR site and it seems that you are also telling people what to think. You even have a guide on how you think people should vote. And all over the site is “Subscribe” links. Isn’t the whole point of blogs to get as many people out there to read your rants and raves? You should be grateful that an obviously liberal blog like DaytonOS is willing to include your viewpoints instead of only featuring fellow-minded liberal rants. And your posts don’t seem to have an author, or an “about me” link or anything else to reveal who is creating the material on your site. And I’m pretty sure the name of the guy you are yelling at is Mike Bock, NOT “Brock”. Anyway, I think this blog is better off without your officious and impertinent viewpoints anyway.

    Stephen
