…continue reading the article Historic South Park: Neighborhood of the Year 2008 I’ve been perusing the new Metroparks website and stopped on the Get Green page. …continue reading the article Miami Valley Grown: A Local Foods Initiative Interesting discussion at the Grassroots Dayton meeting last evening. The motto of Grassroots Dayton is “sowing the seeds of democracy.” The point I always return to is that democracy happens in community and the more authentic the community, the better the chance that democracy will be vigorous and will work to advance the common good. And so, as I said in this post, “How Grassroots Dayton Can Build Democracy By Building Community,” Grassroots Dayton should find ways to help strengthen and build authentic communities. An ideal community, it seems to me, consists of people who know each other, …continue reading the article What I Learned At the Grassroots Dayton Meeting Burned out by the Clinton-Obama primary battle ? I have to admit to feeling more than a bit fatigued, and I think of myself as a political junkie, type AAA. Regular readers will note an absence of posts over the last few weeks, mostly due to the above mentioned campaign fatigue, I am just as suspicious …continue reading the article LANNY DAVIS, CLINTON APOLOGIST, BAKED AND FILLETED Just as predicted by DaytonOS, the Governor today appointed a caretaker to hold the AG post so the DEMS can run Richard Cordray for the unexpired term of Marc Dann this coming November. The only question that remains at this point is will Hugh Quill get the nod for the State Treasurer’s post if Cordray wins the AG spot. You can bet Quill will be working his ass off for Cordray this fall. The state of our democracy should be a big concern to all citizens. We give a lot of praise to democracy, but the truth is, here in Montgomery County we suffer from a weak democracy. The evidence is clear that the Dayton region is disadvantaged because our weak democracy results in poor leadership and bad decisions. Democracy, in a sense, is like the free market; the theory of democracy, like the theory of the free market, is that quality and good results comes from competition. The free market has produced a lot of wealth and a lot of opportunities …continue reading the article Non-Partisan Action Is Needed To Strengthen And Support Our Local Democracy The Dayton Business Journal reported on the Dayton Metro Library plans for a voted bond issue to build new libraries. Send Tim Kambitsch and the Library Board a clear and strong message…NO BOND ISSUE without consolidation of Montgomery County’s library systems. The main branch of the Dayton Metro Library has sat near Cooper Park since 1888, but that might not be the case a few years from now. The library system, which consists of 21 branches, has begun to develop a facilities plan to renovate, construct new branches or even potentially move existing branches. The last facilities update to the system …continue reading the article Dayton Metro Library Plans Bond Issue! “JUST SAY NO!” The following article in this weeks Newsweek details how organizations and people like the Dayton Chamber and Bryan Bucklew helped create the mortgage crisis by preventing local reform efforts under the illusion of reform at the state level. The Dayton Chamber and Bryan Bucklew took the lead (for Dayton area banks) in killing the City of Dayton’s efforts to control predatory lending. Barack Obama has said that our schools should “provide an education for children that will allow them to fulfill their God-given potential.” To make this goal the actual purpose of our educational system would mean a radical transformation of the system, because this goal is radically different from the goal that our educational system currently pursues. One point of confusion is that the goal that Obama states for schools sounds a lot like the goal that schools already proclaim. It hardly sounds like a new idea. When schools endlessly drill students on discrete curriculum, treating students as empty vessels …continue reading the article To Transform Our System Of Education, We Must Redefine The Aim Of The System Quick, get the women and children into the fallout shelter, grab your guns (when you see Tupac) and prepare for the apocalypse. Why? Because we’re here to praise the Dayton Daily News. (Insert paragraph apologizing for lack of posts that blames our alcoholism here, as per usual. You’ve heard it all before, so we won’t bother.) Onto the big news! That’s right, our old friend Doug Harris went out and did himself some ol’ fashioned reporting. And he did well. Color me surprised. No offense to Doug though. Seriously. Yes our good friends at the local paper finally took the initiative to update the Flyer Faithful on what the #4 scorer in UD history has been up to. Sure it’s about a week after the internets have been talking about it, but beggars can’t be choosers right? Some helpful nuggets (Doug’s words, not mine…and they weren’t even copied from Wikipedia! We call that progress.):
Just some good information and quotes all around in the two articles. I suggest you read them. But back to that last nugget….For all we know, said NBA scout could have been from the Timberwolves or Clippers or something. Or even the Knicks, who are good at picking players (who all play guard) and bad on coaching them. But the news has really got me jazzed up about the draft. If B-Rob can put on a good showing in Orlando, who knows? I’d love to see him picked in the second round, but neither he nor I will lose sleep about a six-figure contract to play basketball in Europe. If the Dayton Daily News keeps this up, we’ll have to find someone else to make fun of. Which we’ll gladly do. My only suggestion? Find another f’n picture of the kid. Seriously. He’s been in more than one picture. I’ll gladly send you a couple. …continue reading the article The m-fing sky is falling |
