The Dayton Business Journal reports that The Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio is urging its 24,000 members to vote “Yes,” this November election, to approve a proposed casino-related constitutional amendment. This amendment will permit a $1 billion plan to develop casinos in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo and on the western edge of the Arena District in Columbus.
The Journal quotes FOP leader Mark Drum, “These are tough economic times for Ohio’s cities and counties. We are seeing communities all over the state struggle with declining revenues that have forced them to face cuts in their public safety forces.”
The union said it plans to form a coalition dubbed Cops for Casinos to air its support. The union has opposed earlier gambling issues, including a plan last year to build a gaming resort in Wilmington.
