Read Excerpts From “13 Bankers”

I’m reading Simon Johnson and James Kwak’s new book — “13 Bankers, the Wall Street Takeover and the Next Financial Meltdown” – and posting a summary and excerpts of each chapter. Here is my progress so far:

Dayton Daily Dems and the Sheriff

Today the Dayton Daily, acting for the Democratic Leadership, reported half a story in an attempt to divert attention from Greg Brush’s Clerks office. Here are the facts that Lynn Hulsey omitted:

No documents were destroyed
The Sheriff never approved a request to destroy records regarding foreclosure appraisals
A clerk typed a form and made a mistake, using the term “thru” instead of “upto” on a routine document
The document clearly shows that the Sheriff had not signed off or approved the request Certificate of Records Disposal
The request to destroy records was in draft form to be reviewed by the Records Retention Committee which

The Failure To Reform Health Care Is Another Reminder Of Who Is In Control — The Party Of Money

In Washington, the State of the Union projected an elaborate show — a conclave of the powerful, acting out an impressive ceremony. From the POV of an anthropologist — say, from the planet Xenon — I’m wondering: What is fair analysis of the big meeting in Washington last Wednesday night?

The Xenonian anthropologist, I’m thinking, in observing the State of the Union crowd, would try to understand: Why, in a great nation of 300 million, does this particular tiny group of individuals have the reigns of power? A brief investigation would reveal that in this tribe everything seems to have to

Robert Reich Says President Obama’s Three Year Budget Freeze Is A Bad Idea — It Will Hurt The Middle Class

Robert Reich says that President Obama three year budget freeze proposal is a move exactly opposite of what is needed. Reich asks, “Is the president panicking?”

Reich says, “Obama’s three-year freeze on a large portion of discretionary spending will make it impossible for him to do much of anything for the middle class that’s important. Chalk up another win for Wall Street, another loss for Main.”

Instead of a budget freeze, Reich recommends:

“Enact a second stimulus. It should mainly focus on bailing out state and local governments that are now cutting services and raising taxes, and squeezing the middle class.

Deadline Nears For Montgomery County Democrats To Become Delegates For Meeting To Reorganize MCDP

This last fall, when I sought election to Kettering’s Board of Education, I started a new web-site called CitizensTogether.com. I’ve posted the following article on CitizensTogether.com, and I am copying it here.

Any Democrat seeking to become meaningfully involved in the Montgomery County Democratic Party is invited to petition to become a member of the Central Committee — a delegate to the May Reorganization Meeting. This opportunity happens only once every four years. The last Reorganization Meeting was in 2006.

The deadline to file a petition to become a delegate is February 18, so time is running out. All

Now Is The Time For Montgomery County Democrats To Get Involved To Vitalize and Reform Local Dem Party

Today, I sent a letter to the editor of the Dayton Daily News urging the newspaper to report the Montgomery County Democratic Party Reorganization Meeting. In the letter I accuse the local party of being antidemocratic and clique dominated and say that at the Reorganization Meeting delegates will have an opportunity to change the constitution to make the Party more democratic.  My letter connects to this previous post:  To Reform Our “Political Class” System, We Need A Grassroots Movement To Reform Our Political Parties

Dear Editor,

I am a member of the Montgomery County Democratic Party’s Central Committee. At the December meeting,

Special Interests Controlling Montgomery County Democratic Party Suppress Expansion Of Participation

The leadership of the Montgomery County Democratic Party, it appears, is really not much interested in expanding the Party’s membership. It is all about control. It is all about maintaining the status of special interests.

Last night I attended the January meeting of the Montgomery County Democratic Party. I asked our chairperson, Mark Owens, about publicity for the upcoming Reorganization Meeting. His answer — There has been no publicity, so far. Mark said he had sent out one News Release, but, neither the DDN nor any other news media had reported it.

At the December meeting, I made

To Reform Our “Political Class” System, We Need A Grassroots Movement To Reform Our Political Parties

I’m back.

Martin Gottlieb, writing in today’s DDN, “Massachusetts phenomenon visible early in Dayton,” makes a comparison between the defeat of Democrat Martha Coakley in Massachusetts and the defeat of Democrat Rhine McLin in Dayton. Writes Gottlieb, “The city of Dayton is far more Democratic than Massachusetts … Yet a Democratic mayor just fell here…. The discontent with the Democrats was and is clear.”

The defeat of Democrats Coakley and McLin, within heavily concentrated Democratic areas, shows discontent not just with the candidates, but also with the Democratic Party.

Voters slapped down both Coakley and McLin, in part, because both

GOP running from the House

It has been rumored for weeks that Representative Matt Dolan was leaving the Ohio House. The former contender for Minority Leader has decided to move to Cuyahoga County to run for the County Executive seat.

While this bit of news caught few off guard it does raise questions about the stability of the GOP in Columbus. In what has been described as a shifting of deck chairs. Matt Hurley and Kyle Sisk are reporting that Mary Taylor will move from the Auditor’s office and will accept the LG spot with Kasich. Republicans close to the campaign confirmed that “Seth is exploring”
