Dayton School Board candidates- all behind the times

This weekend I got my first campaign literature for the Dayton School Board race- and it’s already looking glum.

An envelope came from Lee Massoud- with a 3 color envelope, a three color letter addressed to “Dear Dayton Business Owner” and a #10 sized 4/color glossy piece of “literature”- I must say that loosely- since the whole thing amounts to a rah-rah piece about what we should have for a school district- not about how we’re supposed to get there. Thankfully, it didn’t have the union printing bug on it- a democratic party demand that is way past it’s time.

Good Samaritan Stadium, Miami Valley South Stadium, Atrium Stadium, Care-Flight Field -

Premier Health Partners has spent millions over the past year to promote themselves through donations to local athletic programs in exchange for naming their football fields after a Premier Health Partner facility.

The most recent deal with Northmont and Bellbrook was reported in the DDN this morning:

Two more high school athletic programs in the Miami Valley went corporate Friday.

Northmont and Bellbrook high schools announced during football games at their home fields Friday evening that deals had been struck with Premier Health Partners that include stadium renovations.

Under the 10-year, $1 million sponsorship

Could you pass the new Citizenship Test?

Are you smart enough to be a citizen? While it’s long been accepted that ignorance of history is what keeps America strong, it seems that immigrants are all expected to pass a civics test to become citizens and get Tom Tancredo off their backs. And they just updated the whole thing.

In the interest of creating a more standardized, fair, and meaningful naturalization process, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently completed a multi-year redesign of the naturalization test. The revised test, with an emphasis on the fundamental concepts of American democracy and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, will help

As Winter Approaches Vectren Asks for $29 Million

Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio (Vectren), a subsidiary of Vectren Corporation , issued a pre-filing notice today with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) indicating it plans to request an increase in its base rate charges for Vectren’s gas distribution business in its 17-county service area in west central Ohio. If the filing is approved, Vectren expects to increase base rates by approximately $29 million to cover the ongoing cost of operating, maintaining and expanding the approximately 5,200-mile distribution system used to serve 318,000 customers.

More detailed customer bill impacts will be available when Vectren files its application requesting the

Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Bill

The House Committee on Ways and Means unanimously approved H.R. 3648, the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007, today in response to some of the tax issues that have arisen as a result of problems in the subprime mortgage market. Under current law, debt forgiven following mortgage foreclosure or renegotiation is considered income for tax purposes, resulting in tax liability for individuals and families.

Ohio Foreclosure Prevention Task Force Report goes to Strickland

The Ohio Foreclosure Prevention Task Force released their report to Gov. Strickland and you can read the report as a pdf file here. I do not think that it uncovered any remarkable information, but here are some facts from the report:

“The crisis of home foreclosure has touched all corners of Ohio. With few exceptions, every county recorded an increase in foreclosure filings from 2005-2006, reaching the highest level statewide in 13 years.

Good news from Washington: The Matthew Shepard Act passes the Senate

“Today’s Senate vote sends a bold and unmistakable message that violent crimes committed in the name of hate must end,” said Judy and Dennis Shepard, Matthew Shepard’s parents. “The Matthew Shepard Act is an essential step to erasing hate in America and we are humbled that it bears our son’s name. It has been almost nine years since Matthew was taken from us. This bill is a fitting tribute to his memory and to all of those who have lost their lives to

But with what will we line the birdcages?

It is last week’s news, but pertinent to DaytonOS. The BBC shares a report that finds the mainstream media does not reflect the new news consumer. Which is the “Well, duh” type of news story we have come to expect from mainstream media. If you are like me, you are getting your news through your feed
